This gatehouse is all that remains of Cawood Castle – which was once a stronghold of the Archbishops of York. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey – enemy of Henry VIII stayed here before he was arrested and later executed. The building has been restored but is very much the remains of an English Castle. York is close by with its plethora of ghosts and ghost walks. And who knows, maybe Wolsey’s ghost will come knocking at your bedroom door?
Prices from £250 for a midweek 3 night break in winter.
